Language is a tool of communication. There are several forms for communication; the forms are spoken language and written language. The purpose of communication is to send a message from the writer or speaker to the reader or listener. The fact that human is a social mankind; they certainly realize that they cannot survive without interacting to another people. Because of that, people start to make their own way to interact, and then a language was born.
Improving Writing Skills
English is the language which is used by most countries in the world. English has four basic skills; they are Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading. Speaking and Improving Writing are productive skills. Listening and Reading are receptive skills. In the other hand all of four basic language skills are Understanding, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. “Speaking and Writing are most important of these skills, since to some extent they presuppose the other two" . (L.G. Alexander, Practice and progress, London: Longman Group Ltd, 1975)
In this section, writer focuses on Improving Writing skill. Writing is better than public communication; it is a way of thinking. (Fred D. White, The Writer’s Art, California: Wadsworth Publishing Company, 1986) Writing is one of the language skills that should be taught besides the other skills. Writing is regarded as a productive skill it aims at assisting students in expressing their idea written. The process of writing integrates visual, motor and conceptual abilities. Therefore, the students must have extensive knowledge if they want to write something.
Many kinds of text in Writing, there are some texts which have to be mastered by the students. One of the texts is descriptive text. “Descriptive is giving a picture in words.” (Oxford, Advanced Learner’s Dictionary,New York: Oxford university press, 1995) Descriptive text is the text which describes something, someone, situation, and etc. or write about the way person, place, or thing appear. Descriptive writing is to create s clear picture or impression of person, place or object. (Diane A. Wilbur, Composition: Models and Exercise, New York: Harcout, Brace Jovanovich, Publishers, 1982)
When the writer observed the students of Senior High School in Kediri, the writer found that students still do not understand clearly what the descriptive text is. They got low score in writing class. Many students have problems with their skill in writing. They has problem when they learn about Structure of texts and in their vocabulary.
Because of that problem, the writer wants to improve writing skill by outdoor learning methods. The writer hopes by using this method, the student can make it easier to improve their score in descriptive text. And the student will get new experience about study out of class.
